    Biquadratic Filter Applications Using a Fully-Differential Active-Only Integrator

    A new class of active filters, real active-only filters is described and possible implementation issues of these filters are discussed. To remedy these issues, a fully-differential active-only integrator block built around current controlled current conveyors is presented. The integration frequency of the proposed circuit is adjustable over a wide frequency range. As an application, a real active-only filter based on the classical two-integrator loop topology is presented and designed. The feasibility of this filter in a 0.35µm CMOS process is verified through SPECTRE simulation program in the CADENCE design tool

    Rotational and nematicidal effect of lupine (Lupinus albus L.: Leguminosae)

    The study was conducted to evaluate the nematicidial and rotational activity of lupine (Lupinus albus L.), in completely randomized design in a growth room in pots, in 2011. Naturally infested soil, from an arable land containing root-lesion nematode Pratylenchus thornei Sher and Allen including several other genera of free-living was used. Firstly, lupine (L. albus) and wheat (Tricum durum- the variety Eyyubi) were sown and allowed to grow for 3 months. Secondly, differing doses of lupine extracts were applied to the infested bare soil and allowed for a week. P. thornei population was significantly suppressed in lupine planted pots compared to the wheat planted soil and bare control treatment soil. The nematicidal effect of lupin extract was found to be effective on suppressing P. thornei. The suppression effect of the extract increases as the dose increased. The study suggests the use of lupine plant in two ways: as an effective rotational plant against the root-lesion nematodes in wheat growing areas and as an amendment of its seed extract against plant parasitic  nematodes.Key words: Lupine, lupine seed extract, nematodes, nematicidal effect

    Circulating adhesion molecules and arterial stiffness

    Aim: VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 are two important members of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily of adhesion molecules, and their potential role as biomarkers of diagnosis, severity and prognosis of cardiovascular disease has been investigated in a number of clinical studies. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between circulating ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 levels and aortic stiffness in patients referred for echocardiographic examination. Methods: Aortic distensibility was determined by echocardiography using systolic and diastolic aortic diameters in 63 consecutive patients referred for echocardiography. Venous samples were collected in the morning after a 12-hour overnight fast, and serum concentrations of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were measured using commercial enzyme immunoassay kits. Results: Data of a total of 63 participants (mean age 55.6 ± 10.5 years, 31 male) were included in the study. Circulating levels of adhesion molecules were VCAM-1: 12.604 ± 3.904 ng/ml and ICAM-1: 45.417 ± 31.429 ng/ml. We were unable to demonstrate any correlation between indices of aortic stiffness and VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 levels. Conclusion: The role of soluble adhesion molecules in cardiovascular disease has not been fully established and clinical studies show inconsistent results.     Effects of soil solarization and some amendments to control verticillium wilt in established olive orchards

    The effects of solarization treatments, alone or with organic amendments and urea against verticillium wilt on olives were studied. Trials were carried out during the 2005 - 2007 seasons in an olive orchard consisting of 700 4 - 6 year old trees (cv Gemlik) in Germencik region of Aydin. Five treatments were carried out: Solarization (S), solarization + chicken manure (SCM) (1 kg m-2), solarization + olive processing waste (SOPW) (2 kg m-2), solarization + urea (SU) (100 g m-2) and an untreated control (C). Maximum soil temperatures reached in solarized plots were 54.7 and 43.9°C and in the non-solarized plots were 44.4 and 37.4°C at 5 and 20 cm soil depth, respectively. At the end of two years, the disease incidence and severity index decreased to zero in the treatments that included S. In the SCM treatment and in the control, the highest severity index (8.0) was recorded while the disease incidence slightly decreased from 66.7 to 44.4%. In SOPW plots, the disease severity index decreased to 2.0 and the disease incidence remained the same. In SU plots, the disease severity index decreased from 5.6 to 4.5 and disease incidence slightly decreased to 44.4%. As a result, the trees treated with solarization alone and solarization with olive processing waste showed an increased recovery and symptom remission compared with the initial disease severity and incidence.Key words: Olea europaea, Verticillium dahliae, amendments

    Evanescent incompressible strips as origin of the observed Hall resistance overshoot

    In this work we provide a systematic explanation to the unusual non-monotonic behavior of the Hall resistance observed at two-dimensional electron systems. We use a semi-analytical model based on the interaction theory of the integer quantized Hall effect to investigate the existence of the anomalous, \emph{i.e} overshoot, Hall resistance RHR_{H}. The observation of the overshoot resistance at low magnetic field edge of the plateaus is elucidated by means of overlapping evanescent incompressible strips, formed due to strong magnetic fields and interactions. Utilizing a self-consistent numerical scheme we also show that, if the magnetic field is decreased the RHR_{H} decreases to its expected value. The effects of the sample width, temperature, disorder strength and magnetic field on the overshoot peaks are investigated in detail. Based on our findings, we predict a controllable procedure to manipulate the maxima of the peaks, which can be tested experimentally.     An analysis of cyclic scheduling problems in robot centered cells

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.The focus of this study is a robot centered cell consisting of m computer numerical control (CNC) machines producing identical parts. Two pure cycles are singled out and further investigated as prominent cycles in minimizing the cycle time. It has been shown that these two cycles jointly dominate the rest of the pure cycles for a wide range of processing time values. For the remaining region, the worst case performances of these pure cycles are established. The special case of 3-machines is studied extensively in order to provide further insight for the more general case. The situation where the processing times are controllable is analyzed. The proposed pure cycles also dominate the rest when the cycle time and total manufacturing cost objectives are considered simultaneously from a bicriteria optimization point of view. Moreover, they also dominate all of the pure cycles in in-line robotic cells. Finally, the efficient frontier of the 3-machine case with controllable processing times is depicted as an example
